Seder gathering at Stanley

March 24, 2008

On Thursday, March 20, the Christian Education Department sponsored a Passover Seder to precede our Maundy Thursday service. Children, parents, and adult volunteers from Christian Education prepared the traditional Seder Plate elements, Haroset (chopped apples and walnuts), Maror (bitter herbs), Karpas (greens) and salt water, Matzoh (unleavened bread) etc., for use in the service. During our prep time, we snacked on gefilte fish, matzoh ball soup, macaroons and chocolate covered matzoh. Sometimes it pays to volunteer! Reverend Shawn prepared a brief and meaningful Seder service that connected this traditional Exodus story to our Lenten journey. The children took turns reading aloud and explaining the elements of the Seder plate. The Junior High youth had studied Passover and made a Seder Plate with Barb Hauck-Mah, their church school teacher, so they already had a pretty good working knowledge to share with the adults. The service also included singing the African-American spiritual “Go Down, Moses,” which Reverend Shawn played on guitar. (written by LM)

Sunday February 24 Recap

February 25, 2008

Teacher: Barb Hauck-Mah Attendance: 2 Junior High students

“Genesis and Going Green”. Our discussion and activities focused on how to be more environmentally responsible in daily life. We shared some ecofriendly things we were doing personally and as a family. We took a Sierra club quiz on being green while doing laundry, and scored a B. Here’s the link if you want to take the test called “How Green is My Laundry?”

We speculated on steps Stanley Church had taken in this area. Then we did a quick environmental audit around the interior rooms. We replaced some light bulbs with the energy saving fluorescents. We were happy to see Shawn’s office already had the energy saving bulbs. We noted about 10 more bulbs that would need changing . We made a list of some other items to fix. We watched a bit of the end of Arctic Tale, a documentary about global warming’s impact on arctic animals. For more information go to http://green.nationalgeographic.com

No class next Sunday March 2. It’s pancake breakfast and communion Sunday. But, Barb will be in the Christian Ed office 8:30-10 hauling off stuff to bulk pickup disposal. All Junior PF are encouraged to stop in and help for a bit.

Have a great week.
